Chortle ("we", "our", "us") is a social video app where friends create and share fun stories. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.
When you sign up, we collect:
Chortle requests access to your device's camera and microphone solely to record video performances of stories. We never access your camera or microphone without your explicit permission, and only during active recording sessions.
Recorded videos are uploaded to Cloudinary, a third-party cloud hosting service, for storage and delivery. Videos are associated with the chortle they were recorded for and are accessible to the sender and recipient.
When you create and share a chortle, we store the story content, recipient information, and sharing metadata in Google Firebase Firestore.
We store your friend connections, friend requests, and related interaction data to enable the social features of the app.
If you enable push notifications, we store a device token via Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) to deliver notifications when friends send you chortles or respond to yours.
We use Firebase Analytics to collect anonymous usage data such as which features are used and general app performance. This helps us improve the app. We do not track your precise location.
We use the following third-party services:
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes. Data is only shared with the third-party services listed above as necessary to operate the app.
Your data is retained as long as your account is active. You can request deletion of your account and associated data by contacting us. When you delete your account, we will remove your profile, friend connections, and shared data from our systems.
Chortle is intended for users aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal data, please contact us so we can remove it and the associated account.
Zero tolerance. We have a zero-tolerance policy for child sexual abuse and exploitation (CSAE) content, including content that sexualizes minors, grooms minors, or solicits sexual content from or about minors. Such content and behavior are strictly prohibited on Chortle.
How to report CSAE content or behavior:
Our response. When we receive a credible report, we remove the offending content, ban the responsible accounts, and preserve evidence as required by law. Where required, we report incidents to NCMEC and cooperate with law enforcement investigations.
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any significant changes through the app.
If you have questions about this privacy policy or your data, please contact us at:

These Terms of Service ("Terms") are an agreement between you and Kevin Tente, an individual operating Chortle ("we", "our", "us"). By creating an account or using Chortle (the "Service"), you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, don't use the Service.
You must be at least 13 years old to use Chortle. If you are between 13 and the age of legal majority where you live, you confirm a parent or legal guardian has reviewed and agreed to these Terms on your behalf. We may refuse service or terminate accounts at any time if we believe a user does not meet these requirements.
You are responsible for activity on your account and for keeping your sign-in credentials secure. You agree to provide accurate information and to update it if it changes. You can delete your account at any time from the Profile screen; deletion is permanent and removes your associated content.
You keep ownership of the stories, videos, and other content you create or upload to Chortle ("Your Content"). By posting Your Content, you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, transmit, display, and adapt Your Content solely as needed to operate, provide, and improve the Service — for example, transcoding videos for playback, generating thumbnails, and delivering content to recipients you choose.
You represent that you have the rights necessary to grant this license and that Your Content does not violate any third party's rights or applicable law.
You agree not to use the Service to create, upload, share, or solicit content that:
We may remove content and suspend or terminate accounts that violate these rules, with or without notice.
Chortle is user-generated content. If you encounter content or behavior that violates these Terms, please report it from inside the app or email safety@letschortle.com. For suspected child sexual abuse or exploitation material (CSAM/CSAE), report directly to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children CyberTipline at report.cybertip.org, and email us so we can take action on the account.
We may add, change, suspend, or discontinue the Service at any time. We may also terminate or suspend your access immediately for conduct that we believe violates these Terms or harms other users, us, or third parties.
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free, or that content will be accurate or reliable.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits, data, or goodwill, arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability for any claim related to the Service will not exceed one hundred US dollars ($100).
You agree to defend and indemnify us against claims arising from Your Content, your use of the Service, or your violation of these Terms.
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law principles. You and we agree that any dispute arising from or relating to these Terms or the Service will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in California, and you consent to personal jurisdiction in those courts.
We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we'll notify you in the app or by other reasonable means. Continued use of the Service after the change means you accept the new Terms.
